Also, in putting this site together
we may have erred occasionally.
“to err is human; to forgive, divine.”
Any feedback relating to such errors
is highly appreciated, as are
suggestions relating to relevant, and
potentially valuable, alternative subjects.

Lesson 1 Getting Started

The first step is to click the link
below to create a new account at
sites.Google.com/new
which will open a new tab.
You can then move between
the two tabs as you proceed.

On first accessing the site you will
be shown a welcome message.
Click the Got It button.
If you do not already have a
Google account. you will be
prompted to create one.

Once into your sites account,
click the large + image to begin,
then follow the tutorial, and
click the NEXT button to move
through the different lessons.

Next, click the 'Back' arrow on the
top-left of the sites page to return
to the start page.
Near the top-right of the page,
click the words Template Gallery.
Scroll down to view several
templates and choose one that
appears to suit your needs.

Please note that Google may
occasionally change the layout details
of certain information pages without
us being aware of that. If you do notice
any differences between  the guidelines
on this page and the actual layout of a
Google sites information page, your
feedback regarding the issue
is appreciated.

The first site is intended for you to
explore and experiment with.
Later a new site can be created.
and the old one deleted,
so don't worry about doing
anything wrong. The page layout
and the design can be changed,
at any time as you wish, so feel free
to explore the Google sites interface.

After exploring and experimenting,
for a while, click the link below to
view introductory tutorial videos.
'Google sites tutorials'
Then come back to this tab and
read some more.

If you close your computer,
the next time you open it and open
a new browser window, type
sites.Google.com/new
into the browser address line.
If you previously created a new
site you will be returned to your
Google sites account, otherwise, you
will again be invited to
create an account.

You could also bookmark
your Google sites account page
along with this page.

If you access sites from a different device,
you will be invited to log in.
Be cautious about where and how you
log in to your account
as hackers are everywhere.
Also, be certain to make a secure note of
your account and the login details
you have entered.

We suggest keeping sensitive details
such as passwords
in a secure location, written down in a
book especially kept for such purposes
rather than recording such details
on your computer where they
could possibly be hacked. Plus, make a
physical backup copy of your
written records just in case
the original goes missing.

Also avoid displaying your passwords
when accessing an account
(only display the dots),
as displaying your passwords
is one way that hackers can learn
what the passwords are. Also, avoid having
simple, easy-to-guess passwords.

If you experience any difficulties in
following the guidelines below, please
advise us through the email address
displayed at the bottom of the page.
We will then review and adjust
the relevant wording.

Your feedback is appreciated.

in the section below and not

Please Note
Beware of some graphics programs
currently being promoted online
as being easy to use and free,
as we believe they may be scams
designed to encourage users
to set up accounts and
submit their credit card details.

(ICANN is the top authority for domain names)

Click below to visit the ICANN Lookup
page to check if the domain name
you wish to register is available
Domain Name Search
If a search returns a
not found in the Registry
response, it indicates that the domain
has not been registered
and so should ideally be available.
A different response may either
indicate that the domain is already
registered, or indicate that ICANN
are not the appropriate authority.

Important
Use only the secure ICANN Domain Name Search
window linked to above (or the IANA domain name
search feature, or an alternative and appropriate
top-level domain name organization)
to check that the desired name is available.
Do not use the whois.com registry
Once you have confirmed the availability
of a domain name,
(no registration already exists)
register it immediately
with your chosen registrar.
Avoid searching for the name again at
other online locations before registering it,
as doing so could result in the name being
registered by a registrar or by someone else seeking
to charge you an increased registration fee.
Hackers and scammers are everywhere.

Setting up a domain name  can be
challenging the first time you do it,
although viewing relevant videos at YouTube does help.
Contact us via the email
displayed at the bottom of this page
if you get stuck, and we will try to assist.

We have our domain names registered with several different registrars because we checked different ones out over the years.

The register we use for our Australian .au domain names is http://www.Ventraip.com.au*
based in Victoria, who can register any .au  domain name, plus many other domain names.

The domain name for this site http://www.gsites.live is registered with http://www.name,com*, which has registered domain names since 1995, and is an excellent registrar who we use and recommend.

It is now also possible to register many domain names directly with Google domains at https://domains.google*, and we highly recommend them as excellent registrars.

You can if you wish move any registered
domain to a different registrar
following a mandatory 60-day holding period.

The only way to
submit your website to Google
is via the URL Inspection Tool

carry out both of these activities yourself.
however, Goggle has become pretty good
at finding a new website so long as the
site is linked to from a popular
social networking or other popular and
already indexed site.

Note
If a site already displays in the
Google search engine,
then it has already been indexed.

Lesson 33 Operating Systems

A recently released  operating system
from Google  is Chrome OS flex,
flex is more than a browser,
as it is an entire operating
system that can completely
replace Windows or Linux Ubuntu etc,
and will even run on Macs.
You can even run the system off a
USB stick to try it out,
or you can fully install the app onto
your computer with relative ease.
It will even give some old laptop
computers from as far back as 2008
a completely new lease of life,
and it is said to be very secure.

Lesson 34 Hosting

With Google sites, hosting is already
provided. However, once your site
grows beyond the ability of Google
sites to provide the services you
require, you are going to need to
consider securing alternative hosting
services. Although, for the vast majority
of sites this may never be an issue.
